“The screenplay is like sheet music for filmmakers…”

The screenplay bridges the gap between a unique, innovative movie concept and being able to produce the film. It’s the foundation for the entire filmmaking process, and the resource nearly every production needs to get started. It’s the tool to communicate both the heart of a story and it’s scene-by-scene details to the team of creatives helping bring it to the screen.

In the process of screenwriting, a writer works to format a story or concepts into a script typically using screenwriting software, like Final Daft, to properly indent scene headings, characters, dialogue, and action as well as communicate specific camera direction, shots, and transitions between scenes. The screenplay is like sheet music for filmmakers; translating a story into the visual, auditory, and technical language a filmmaking crew understands.

Beyond formatting with specific indentations and fonts, a screenwriter works on the timing and structure of the story to help carry the audience on an intentionally timed emotional journey throughout the film’s duration. Plotting the story into a story arc with three-act structure, and determining the right moments for each element to take place with respect to the overall length of the film, helps to make sure the audience stays engaged and feels the drama.
