Electrifying showers

Living in a developing country, everything from crossing the street to taking a shower can be an act of faith. From an early age we learn that electricity and water don’t mix. Here in Costa Rica, we can find an exception to that rule.

Shower
Many households in Costa Rica run on cold water. The one area of the house you can find hot water is in the shower where electric shower heads heat the water as it flows through the apparatus—the lighter the flow, the hotter the shower. You don’t get an invigorating massage at the same time; however, the water is hot enough to make you want to linger past your environmental awareness.

Maybe this why future intentions in Spanish are often followed with “Si dios quiere or por suerte,” which means “if God wills” or “if I’m lucky.” I’m going to exit this shower alive, si dios quiere.

  1. Came across these during my last visit to Costa Rica and believe it or not, I got electrocuted when trying to adjust it. :) Not too bad, but it sure woke me up!

  2. Oh no! I’ll try to remember not to attempt any adjustments!

  3. Ran into something like this in Guatemala. If I touched the hot/cold knobs while in the shower, a little tingle would run through my arm!

  4. Yes, that has happened to me, too! It’s a bit terrifying!
