Health tips for nomadic women

Well, the last post was a little TMI, I admit. On a more serious note, it’s extremely important for nomadic women to stay healthy. If you’re traveling solo, staying fit not only means staying on your toes, but it also means being able to fully engage with your surroundings.

More than just worrying about bug bites, what is often most exhausting is the fact that routine doesn’t easily set in when you’re on the go. Even when I’m settled down in one place, adjusting to new surroundings takes time. Listening to your body when it begs for rest is vital.

Besides taking time to rest, I also watch what I eat. In a new place, it’s easy to grab an empanada and a coffee at the bakery for lunch, or to eat way too much bread and cheese because it’s one of the easiest and cheapest things to throw together. Worst case scenario is the person who won’t risk walking into a local restaurant and instead will “play it safe” by frequenting McDonalds and other recognizable fast food favorites. Not only will you miss out on discovering local favorites, but your stomach and your wallet will suffer.

Keeping up an exercise routine is not impossible on the road. While I get plenty of exercise hopping buses, walking more than driving, and hiking, I also go to the local gym and take dance classes. Even if you’re just passing through for a couple of days, get a pass to the local gym or take a class. It’s the best way to get to know a bit more about the local culture and to stay healthy.
